The Story Behind GSM.elevate()

A free community built on the belief that nobody should have to climb alone.

// THE WHY

It started with a winding path.

Founder of GSM.elevate()

I went to college right out of high school for software applications programming. After graduating, I quickly found out how hard those roles were to land. So I took a different path and spent a few years doing cellular phone repair before moving into sales. Somewhere along the way, a passion for technology pulled me back. I went back to school for a degree in system and network administration.

That second degree led me to an overnight position at a data center doing maintenance and vendor support. It wasn't glamorous, but it changed everything. That one role gave me visibility into backup and storage, monitoring, networking, development, infrastructure, hardware. All of it. It also taught me something important: you will never know everything. Technology moves too fast. The moment you think you've got it figured out, something changes.

What made the real difference were the people. I had mentors in that role who gave me their time freely. They showed me what was possible, helped me see career paths I didn't even know existed, and set me up to move into web and mobile development, incident management, API development, infrastructure, DevOps, and cybersecurity. None of that happens without someone being willing to sit down with you and share what they know.

Those mentors taught me that it's OK not to know everything. That being humble, sharing your experience, and seeking out knowledge will take you further than any certification or degree alone.

GSM.elevate() exists because I want to be that mentor for someone else. The same guidance and support that was given to me freely, I want to give back. If I can help even one person find their path in this industry the way my mentors helped me find mine, then this is worth it.

GSM stands for Great Smoky Mountains, the ridgeline we call home. .elevate() is a function call, the way a developer tells a program to do something. Put them together and you get the idea: a community in East Tennessee that helps people level up in tech.
